Replacement patio-door prices vary according to the width of the opening, the number of panels, frame material, glazing and door style. Standard uPVC sliding doors will usually cost less than large aluminium sliders or bi-fold doors. The condition of the existing frame, lintel, threshold and surrounding brickwork can also affect installation costs. We recommend arranging a free survey rather than relying on a generic online price.

French doors consist of two hinged doors and suit standard or relatively narrow openings. Sliding patio doors use large glazed panels that move along a track, providing wide views without requiring space for the doors to swing. Bi-fold doors fold into a compact stack and can open most of a large aperture. The best choice depends on your available space, budget, preferred appearance and how extensively you want to open the room to the garden.

Planning permission is not normally required when replacing existing doors with a similar design. Permission may be necessary if you are creating or substantially widening an opening, changing the appearance of certain elevations, or working on a listed property, conservation-area property or home affected by an Article 4 direction. Requirements vary by property, so homeowners should check with their local planning authority before structural work begins.

Replacement glazed doors and frames generally need to comply with Building Regulations covering energy efficiency, ventilation, safety glazing and structural safety. A suitably registered Competent Person Scheme installer can self-certify eligible replacement work and notify the local authority. Whitefield Windows is CERTASS registered and can explain which certification applies. Creating or widening an opening may require a separate Building Regulations application because structural work and a new lintel could be involved.

A kitchen window can often be replaced with French doors, provided the opening, wall construction and available external space are suitable. The work normally involves removing brickwork beneath the window, assessing the existing lintel, forming the doorway and installing an appropriate threshold. Building Regulations approval will usually be required for the structural alteration. During our survey, we inspect the opening and surrounding construction before recommending the appropriate installation method.

Yes, sliding patio doors can usually be replaced with French doors without substantially changing the existing opening. The dimensions, lintel, threshold and condition of the surrounding structure must be checked first. Depending on the width, the new design may include glazed side panels around the French doors. A professional survey ensures the proposed door set fits securely, operates correctly and provides suitable weather resistance and energy efficiency.

Neither option is universally better. French doors provide a traditional appearance and allow both doors to open fully, but they require clear space for the doors to swing. Sliding patio doors are useful where space is limited and offer larger areas of uninterrupted glass. In many Manchester homes, the decision depends on the opening width, room layout, garden access and style of the property. We can compare both options during a home survey.

uPVC patio doors offer good insulation, straightforward maintenance and excellent value, making them suitable for many Manchester homes. Aluminium doors provide slimmer frames, larger glazed areas and greater strength across wide openings, although they normally cost more. Both materials can deliver strong security and energy performance when correctly specified and installed. Your best option will depend on the opening size, preferred appearance, colour requirements and available budget.

Modern French and patio doors can be highly energy efficient when they combine insulated frames, energy-efficient glazing, warm-edge spacer bars and effective weather seals. Correct installation is equally important because gaps around the frame can cause draughts and heat loss. Replacing old or poorly fitting doors may improve comfort and can contribute to better overall energy performance, although the effect on an EPC rating depends on the complete property.

Professionally installed French and patio doors can provide a high level of security. Important features include multi-point locking, strong frames, secure cylinders, internal glazing and toughened or laminated safety glass where required. Security also depends on accurate fitting and adjustment because poorly aligned doors may not engage correctly with their locking points. During installation, we check the operation, alignment and locking system before handing the doors over to the customer.

Patio doors may be repairable when the problem involves alignment, rollers, hinges, handles, locks, seals or an individual failed glazing unit. Replacement may be more economical when the frame is badly distorted, the doors remain draughty, several components have failed or the existing system provides poor security and energy efficiency. Whitefield Windows can inspect the doors and advise whether a targeted repair or complete replacement offers the better long-term solution.
