Help and Advice
Here are answers to the questions we get asked most frequently…
How energy-efficient are your products?
Whether double or triple glazed, our windows outperform most of the other leading windows in the UK – due to our innovative profile (frame) design.
The BFRC Energy Rating Scheme is the UK’s national system for rating the energy efficiency of windows. The rating scale runs from A+ to G, and indicates how well a product will:
- help you contain and conserve heat in your home
- keep out the elements
- resist condensation on the inside, and
- reduce sound.
Our windows and doors can achieve up to an ‘A+12’ rating, better than most of our competitors. That means you’ll be able to enjoy a warmer and quieter home as well as lower energy bills.
Do you offer triple glazing?
The glass in the doors we provide is triple-glazed. Our windows are double-glazed. Why?
Improved energy efficiency relies on the air gap between the glass panes being the optimal distance of 20mm. The depth of door frames enables us to ensure that gap between three panes of glass. The depth of window openings usually doesn’t provide enough space to incorporate three panes of glass and leave the optimum space between for thermal efficiency. This is why you need to be very careful when considering windows from other firms that claim they are triple-glazed. Yes, they have three panes of glass in them but do they have the right air gap between them? If not, you’re paying for an extra pane of glass with no improvement on double glazing.
What guarantees do you provide?
Everything you buy is custom-made with care in our Workshop in Bredbury. When we have finished installing your choice of products we will give you the following insurance-backed guarantee:
- 10-year guarantee as standard on all new window and door frames for defects, discolouration, distortion or failure in the welded joints
- Five year guarantee on the failure of glass sealed units (ie if you start to see misting between the panes)
- One year guarantee on all locking mechanisms, hinges and metallic moving points.
Your guarantee is freely transferable to subsequent owners of your home.
How secure are your windows and doors?
All our windows and doors are designed, tested and certified to meet the highest standards of security. With built-in strength, high security multipoint locks and the latest in ModLok™ technology (available on our patio and bi-folding door range) you can sleep soundly whilst knowing your home is secure and your family is protected. Our windows and doors also hold Secure by Design status, meaning they have been designed with exceptional security features, and meet the requirements of the Association of Chief Police Officers.
What colours are your doors and windows available in?
Our door and windows come in a wide range of colours and finishes. To find the shade and style that suits your home, take a look at our brochures in the download centre.
Who will come and fit my windows and doors?
We only ever use skilled craftsmen who we would use for our own homes. We use them directly and, unlike other firms you might experience, they won’t rush through your job to get to the next one.
Our team will take all the time needed to finish their job at your home. They will treat you and your home with respect, taking care to protect everything they can, and tidying up afterwards. We don’t allow our installers to play radios or smoke at customers’ homes.
I need to open up my wall for bi-folding doors. Can you help me with that?
If you need additional work such as removing part of a wall, or plastering and painting to make good, we can make your life easier by incorporating it into the job. We will either do the work ourselves (Phil is trained in construction and civil engineering) or bring in expert tradesmen who we’d be happy to have work on our own homes.
Do your windows contain lead?
No, our window and doors are lead-free. Lead is not allowed in petrol or paint anymore, and we think it shouldn’t be in frames either.
How quickly can you start work?
Because we custom-make our windows and doors at our own workshop we can often start work more quickly than other companies who have to send measurements away and wait in the queue at the fabricators. When we discuss your needs with you we’ll provide you with an accurate, honest quotation both in terms of time and money. So you’ll know exactly where you stand and can plan accordingly.
Can you provide a door wide enough to fit a wheelchair?
Yes, because we custom-make all our doors. And, because we have building and engineering expertise we can also widen the door for you. If you need other alterations to your home we can recommend tradesmen who are experienced at creating all manner of adaptations.
What’s the smallest door you can create?
We can design and custom-make most sizes of the doors. The one limit we do have is on making composite doors which cannot be narrower than 850mm.
